Covestro partners with Pearl Polyurethane to supply climate-neutral MDI
Views:952 Updated:2022-06-24
Pearl Polyurethane Systems, a leading portfolio company of polyurethane (PU) materials in the Middle East and Africa, will in the future receive climate-neutral MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) from Covestro. From the cradle to the Covestro factory gate, it is climate-neutral, thanks to the use of alternative raw materials - based on plant waste - distributed into the product according to ISCC PLUS's certified mass balance.

The new MDI enables Pearl to help its downstream customers reduce their carbon footprint by offering a broader portfolio of more sustainable raw materials as part of its new branded EcoPearl product range. The new MDI grades from Covestro can be used in numerous construction, cold chain and automotive applications.

Pearl is the first material manufacturer in the EMEA region to obtain carbon-neutral MDI from its former joint venture partner and long-term supplier Covestro. Covestro has achieved ISCC-PLUS certification at 5 of its 16 main plants and is able to supply climate-neutral MDI from its plants in Uerdingen, Germany, and Caojing, China.

Following a comprehensive ISCC audit to trace the supply chain and assess the sustainability requirements of raw materials, Pearl became the first local polyurethane portfolio company to receive ISCC certification in March 2022, enabling it to verify the individuality of its product formulations and raw materials used. A sustainability certificate. The certification follows an internationally recognized five-step process and allows end users to measure the sustainability performance of the ISCC certified products they use.

In commercial building insulation, ISCC PLUS certification allows end users and tenants of such buildings constructed with insulation products provided by Pearl to easily measure and verify the sustainability performance of the buildings they live in. This factor is becoming increasingly important to businesses as consumers become more concerned about their environmental impact.

Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer of Covestro, said: "This mass-balanced carbon-neutral MDI further enriches our broad portfolio focused on the circular economy and responds to the growing demand for more sustainable products. By partnering with Pearl Together with companies like Polyurethane, we are helping more and more downstream users in various industries achieve their sustainability goals, and together we are accelerating the transition to a circular economy.” Covestro plans to further expand its portfolio of carbon-neutral products.

Martin Kruczinna, CEO of Pearl Polyurethane Systems, commented: "Rigid polyurethane foam, as an excellent thermal insulation material, plays an important role in achieving the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius. As Covestro Like the first among polyurethane raw material producers to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035, Pearl acts as a change agent in the polyurethane materials industry, enabling its customers to gain competition by helping customers adapt to greener technologies and improve the thermal insulation properties of their products Benefits. Adding carbon neutral MDI solutions to our newly named EcoPearl product range helps our customers achieve their emissions reduction and circular economy goals.”
